This document governs the Buried Beneath Vault service and should be read together with the other Buried Beneath Vault legal documents. Nothing in these documents excludes or restricts rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded under UK consumer or data-protection law.

1. Ordnance Survey

Base mapping in the Vault is Ordnance Survey mapping supplied through the OS Maps API and shown under our own OS data agreement.

Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights.

Ordnance Survey mapping is displayed within the Vault for your own research use only. You must not scrape, harvest, systematically copy or bulk-extract OS mapping or tiles; download raw map data or tiles for use outside the Vault; resell, sublicense, publish or otherwise redistribute OS mapping or any substantial part of it; or use it to create, train or operate a competing mapping, land data or derived mapping service.

Crown copyright and database rights in OS mapping remain with Ordnance Survey and the Crown. All copyright, database right, trade mark and attribution notices must be preserved wherever mapping is displayed, printed or exported. OS mapping is provided subject to the licence terms under which we obtain it, including any applicable restrictions on use, storage, caching and derived works; those terms take precedence over anything inconsistent stated here.

If you believe there is an error or omission in OS mapping, it can be reported to Ordnance Survey directly through their errors and omissions form, linked from the map view.

Terrain analysis, evidence, areas of interest and target scoring shown over OS mapping are our own interpretation and are not supplied, checked or endorsed by Ordnance Survey.

2. Environment Agency LiDAR

Terrain analysis uses Environment Agency LiDAR Composite Digital Terrain Model data, published under the Open Government Licence. Environment Agency copyright and/or database right, all rights reserved. Terrain interpretation, anomaly detection and scoring derived from that data are our own analysis and are not endorsed by the Environment Agency.

3. what3words

Where a what3words address is shown, it is generated using the what3words service to help you describe a location precisely in the field.

what3words and the what3words logo are trade marks of what3words Limited. Use of what3words addresses is subject to what3words’ own terms and attribution requirements, and any additional attribution or logo placement required under our commercial arrangement will be applied here and alongside the displayed address.

Coordinates produced by converting a what3words address are treated as temporary working data. They are held privately only for as long as the current operation needs them and are then cleared automatically. Whenever the exact centre of a report is needed again — for the exact map or field navigation — the three-word address is converted again through the licensed what3words conversion service; a stored coordinate is never used in place of that request. Your saved report, its analysis and its location reference are unaffected.

4. Historic mapping

Land Intelligence maps offer an optional historic Ordnance Survey layer (1919–1947 edition), reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland and loaded directly by your browser. Historic-map alignment with current mapping is approximate. Vault does not currently provide pre-1880 mapping, and historic-map-derived features are withheld from customer reports.

5. Satellite and aerial imagery

Satellite imagery in released Land Intelligence reports is Esri World Imagery, served through an ArcGIS Location Platform account licensed to Buried Beneath LTD. Imagery is “Powered by Esri”, and the imagery-provider credits shown on the map are those supplied by the live Esri service (for example Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics and their contributing sources). Esri World Imagery is subject to the Esri Master Agreement and ArcGIS terms of use. Only map tile coordinates required to serve the imagery are transmitted to Esri; no Vault customer identifiers are deliberately sent, and no satellite request is made before a report is released. Other third-party imagery is not displayed without a licence permitting that use.

6. Historic England heritage data

Earthwork Intelligence checks detected terrain forms against open Historic England datasets: the National Heritage List for England (Scheduled Monuments) and the Archaeological Investigations / heritage record layers published by Historic England through their open data services. These are used as a reference check only — never to generate a result, and never as endorsement of any finding by Historic England.

Contains Historic England data © Historic England, licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Historic England spatial data contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right.

Records are requested live from Historic England's published services at the time each report is produced, and the date they were queried is shown with the terrain results in the report. Historic England may update, add or withdraw records at any time, so a record shown in an older report may since have changed.

7. Postcode location data

Postcode searches are resolved through postcodes.io, which uses ONS and Ordnance Survey derived open data. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right; contains Royal Mail data © Royal Mail copyright and database right; contains National Statistics data © Crown copyright and database right, all licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. A postcode gives an approximate postcode-area centre, not an exact position.

8. Archaeological and historical references

Reports may cite published archaeological, historical and heritage sources. Citations are provided for research context; the underlying works remain the property of their authors and publishers, and we do not reproduce substantial portions of them.

9. Reporting an attribution issue

If you believe a data source is incorrectly attributed or used, contact us at support@buriedbeneath.co.uk and we will investigate promptly.
